The Hangover (2009)
Directed by: Todd Phillips
Written by: Jon Lucas and Scott Moore
Released by: Warner Brothers
"It's not a purse, it's a satchel. Indiana Jones wears one."
'The Hangover' is the new R-Rated comedy from director Todd Phillips who brought us such comedic hits as 'Road Trip' and 'Old School'. The film is based around a group of 4 guys who travel to Las Vegas for one final hurrah before their friend Doug gets married. Before they venture off into Sin City, they decide to make a promise with one another that no matter what happens that night, no one speaks a word of it. This ends up being a rather easy promise for them to keep as they awaken the next morning completely hungover and with no recollection of what happened. To make matter's even worse there's a tiger in their bathroom, a baby in their closet and no sign of their friend Doug's whereabouts. The 3 remaining guys spend the rest of the film retracing their steps from the night before in hopes of finding their missing friend.
To me, this movie is beyond hilarious and keeps getting better every time I watch it. Zach Galifianakis easily steals the show here as the unlovable loser Alan and Doug's soon-to-be Brother in-law. The film also stars Bradley Cooper and Ed Helms, playing a character very similar to that of his character "Andy" from the hit TV show 'The Office'. With each passing minute these 3 guys are put in some of the craziest situations you'll ever find in a comedy and once it gets going it never lets up. Hell even the end credits are ridiculously funny. The writing team of Jon Lucas and Scott Moore do one heck of a job here.
Another thing that I really love about this film and something you don't often see in a lot of comedies is it's fantastic cinematography. Watching this film's Blu-ray presentation is quite spectacular with all of the beautiful high definition shots of the Vegas strip and various Nevada landscapes. The editing is also terrific with some pretty neat time lapsing effects involving shots of the city and Alan working the black jack tables.
'The Hangover' was the sleeper hit of 2009, sticking around in theatres for over 28 weeks and raking in over $468 million dollars worldwide which is incredible considering it's $35 million budget. It even beat out 'Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets' to take the #7 spot of all time highest grossing movies for Warner Brothers Pictures. If you're a fan of R-Rated comedies that lean towards the vulgar side, I honestly can't recommend this movie enough. Easily the funniest movie I saw in 2009.
