"Your First Impulse Your Last Sensation"
This obscure 1990 horror/thriller stars ‘Breakfast Club’ alumni Ally Sheedy playing the role of a clairvoyant psychic, Cayce Bridges. Cayce works directly with the local authorities, using her psychic powers to help solve murder cases, however she finds herself in an awful predicament when she becomes stalked by the unrelenting “Shadow Man" killer, who just so happens to have psychic abilities of his own.
The film has sort of a ‘Silence of the Lambs’ vibe to it and it doesn’t stick to the traditional “Guess who the killer is?” format which you find in a lot of movies. ‘Fear’ also has a great supporting cast, including Lauren Hutton, Michael O'Keefe and the magnificent character actor Pruitt Taylor Vince (Jacobs Ladder / Identity) taking on the role of the “Shadow Man” in one of his early acting gigs.
Despite its R rating, the film is pretty tame by today's standards. There is a sequence where a woman is suffocated with a plastic bag over her head, but most of the other deaths happen off camera where the violence is only implied. The deaths are also mostly shown through Cayce's "psychic visions" where the cinematography turns to a cloudy, dream-like state. This makes for a rather creepy atmosphere, showing the killer's sadistic point-of-view as he stalks his next victim.
Overall a cool little film that rarely gets talked about, but one that's definitely worth checking out.
