Deadly Impact (2010)

Directed by: Robert Kurtzman

Released by: MGM Home Entertainment/20th Century Fox
Sean Patrick Flanery (The Boondock Saints) plays police detective Tom Armstrong...a man who is placed in a life altering situation when a sadistic madman forces him to kill his fiancé Julie in order to stop a bomb from detonating. Veteran actor Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix) plays the lead villain David Kaplow, whom 8 years later has taken the entire city of Albuquerque, New Mexico hostage with a series of deadly bombings and it's up to Armstrong to stop him once and for all.
'Deadly Impact' is directed by legendary special effects artist, Robert Kurtzman, who has directed several horror films over the years, with this being his first time working in the action genre. The film itself has a look and feel similar to that of popular television police dramas such as 'Criminal Minds' and 'CSI'...This is likely due to the film's low budget, giving it that television-like quality which isn't necessarily a bad thing. Overall 'Deadly Impact' is a fast paced thrill ride from start to finish, with fine acting by the two leads, Flanery and Pantoliano. Director Robert Kurtzman also does a great job at working around obvious budgetary restraints as a filmmaker and creating realistic looking visual effects important to the films overall success...he also has a brief cameo role in the film as one of Pantoliano's victims. 'A Nightmare on Elm Street' star Amanda Wyss also has a brief role in the film, playing Flanery's girlfriend Julie who is killed off early on in the picture.
I must say that I had a lot of fun with 'Deadly Impact' and thought it was one of Kurtzman's better films overall if I'm being perfectly honest. It's certainly no 'Die Hard' or 'Heat' but if you enjoy action heavy TV shows like '24' than you'll certainly dig this film and want to check it out. The only part that was a bit lacking was in the film's 5.1 channel Dolby audio track, as much of the sound seemed to emerge in the front channels more than anything else.
'Deadly Impact' made its way onto DVD for the first time this past Tuesday, April 20th courtesy of MGM Home Entertainment and 20th Century Fox. When it comes to special features, the DVD itself is a bare bones release...The only feature you'll find on here is an option for English subtitles for the hearing impaired which is unfortunate. Regardless, it's still a quality movie though that's worth picking up.
