Combat Shock (1986)

"Fighting, killing, maiming. Agent orange and the torture cages were the easy part!"

Frankie Dunlan (Rick Giovinazzo), returns home from Vietnam only to find himself in the midst of an entirely new battle…the war on poverty.

Shot on a budget of only $40,000, 'Combat Shock' is a
startling look into the fragile mindset of a Vietnam War Vet suffering from Post-traumatic stress disorder and other mental issues originating from his time as a P.O.W. ...On a wider scope, the film also brings much needed attention to the fact that so many war vets were simply kicked to the curb, rather than being provided the help that they needed following the conclusion of the Vietnam conflict.  Because of this, I feel that 'Combat Shock' truly stands out amongst a large number of Hollywood films that focus only on the war itself.

The film isn't perfect
, in fact it suffers quite a bit due to budgetary restraints.  Vietnam sequences for example are created using old stock footage mixed with shots of actor Rick Giovinazzo running through fields around Staten Island (NY)...and let's not forget his deformed baby which looks more like a giant glob of modeling clay than an actual newborn.  Regardless of any issues the film might have, the final 10 minutes remains some of the most disturbing sequences I've ever witnessed in a movie...leaving you with a rather sickening feeling inside that you won't soon forget.
